Russia is not backing down, but it can’t be said for the U.S. and its allies who are increasingly looking at a weakened geopolitical position.

The remote, Chinese military base feared by the U.S. is located in the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. It harbors no ballistic rockets capable of reaching the U.S. mainland, boasts a single airplane runway, and has been under construction for more than a decade.

The shooting down of a Chinese balloon near Charleston (New York Times, 2/5/23) and an Air Force general’s prediction of a war with China (NBC, 1/27/23) have ignited media talk of the possibility of confrontation between the two nuclear powers. It’s scary stuff, indeed, but the media hype is dangerously overblown.

Russia’s primary offense is that it occupies a strategic area of the world that contains vast natural resources and which is critical to Washington’s “pivot to Asia” plan.
